Andrew Jackson Dillinder was born on September 2, 1840 in Ozark County*, Missouri to William and Martha "Patsy" May Dillinder. He is thought that he has at least 4 siblings: James B. Dillinder (1816-1864), Charles Dillinder (1820-1892), Elizabeth Mary Dillinder (1830-1871), and Martha J Dillinder (1835-?). Andrew was the youngest.

Not much is known about his parents. There is a marriage license for William Dillender and Patsy May in Madison County, Kentucky on August 9,1816. Dillinder is spelled several different ways - Dillinder, Dillender, Dillander, Dellender. With Andrew and his descendants it is spelled Dillinder.

Andrew's parents, William Dillinder and Martha "Patsy" May were married in Madison County, Kentucky on August 9. 1816.

1850 Census taken October 4, 1850, Ozark County, Missouri

The 1850 census shows Andrew Jackson Dillinder living with his mother, Martha age 53, and his sister, Martha, age 15, and he is age 9.

On the 1850 census the household has Martha, 53, as the head of household with her daughter Martha, 15,  and her son, Andrew, 19, in Ozark County, Missouri. Not much is known about the Dillinders, but it appears that William died between 1840 and 1850 and the older children left home probably moving out of state. On the 1860 census there is a household found in Parker County, Texas that is probably them. For most of the 1860 census, just the first initial of the persons' name is given and the last name. The last name looks like Dillinder, but ancestry.com read it as Dillinden. Therefore, it has been hard to find. The first person is a female head, 63, named M Dillinder. The second person is a female, 25, the first initial is hard to read, but the age is 25, 10 years more than daughter, Martha's, was in 1850. The third person is a male, 19, named A Dillinder. There is no other way of verifying this, but it looks like Martha and her two youngest children have moved to Parker County, Texas. One would think she would have done this with other family members, but as of yet no records or family stories can verify that. An 1870 census has not been located. The rest of Andrew's life he lived in Palo Pinto County either in or close to Mineral Wells. He could have actually been located in the same place all these years and the county line moved. Part of Mineral Wells is in Parker County and part is in Palo Pinto County. No further information on his sister, Martha, or his mother, Martha, nor on his older siblings.

On April 11, 1862 A. J. Dillinder enlisted into the Confederacy in Texas.

On his service records his name is spelled Dillander and a couple of times it is spelled Dillinder.

In the Spring of 1864 Griffin's Battalion, also known as 21st Regiment Texas Infantry Battalion, and the 11th Texas Cavalry consolidated to become the 21st Texas Infantry Regiment under Colonel Ashley Spaight. At that time they were on duty at Galveston and the Texas coastline including Sabine Pass and Matagorda Island. For a short period of time they went to Marshall, Texas and Shreveport, Louisiana. They were there until April of 1865 and did not see any combat. In May 1865 they disbanded.

A.J. Dillinder married his first wife, Martha Ann Nipp, on January 17, 1866 in Ellis County, Texas. Martha Ann was the daughter of Reuben and Drucillia Blue Nipp. She gave birth to John William Dillinder on November 15, 1866. Martha Ann passed away in 1868 in Palo Pinto, Texas, at the age of 21. They had been married 2 years. Although it is not known for sure but it looks like his mother, Martha, and his sister, Martha, and his wife, Martha Ann died within a few years of each other. It is not known who helped him with the baby.

A.J. married Clarinda Stephens, daughter of John and Sarah Bledsoe Stephens, in Tarrant County, Texas on June 1, 1869. The Tarrant County courthouse burned down, so there is no marriage license that survived the fire. However, her application for Confederate Widow's Pension verifies the date of their marriage.

Jim was the first child born to A.J. and Clarinda Stephens. His birthdate was July 31, 1870 in Palo Pinto County, Texas. In addition to John W Dillinder, his siblings are as follows: Martha Dillinder (1871-1882), Sarah Dillinder (1874-1955), Lucy Dillinder (1875-1948), Etta Dillinder (1877-1943), Minnie (1880-1882), Ida Dillinder (1881-1972), Charles Dillinder (1884-1909), Anna Belle Dillinder (1886-1972),  and Alice Dillinder (1888-1963). For a short period of time from 1875-1877 they moved to Arkansas and then came back to Palo Pinto County, Texas. Martha, Lucy and Etta were born in Arkansas. All the other children were born in Palo Pinto County, Texas.

On the 1880 Census it shows that Andrew and Clarinda live between her parents and her brother, William, and his young family. The 1870 census has not been found, but on the 1880 census Samuel Stephens, 13, Clarinda's nephew is living with Andrew and Clarinda. Nothing is known about his parents and he doesn't appear on future censuses. The only way that we know he is Clarinda's nephew is on the census.

The 1880 Agriculture census shows Andrew J Dillinder living between his father in law and one of his brothers in law.
