He broke and rode his own steer, Blackie, as the high school mascot. He enjoyed playing football on the Graham Steers team.

This picture is not very clear, but Bill is on Blackie getting ready for a parade. His great grandfather,
W.A. Ribble and his grandfather, Horace Ribble, are behind him. They all rode in the parade together.

In February of 1945 during WWII, he joined the Marine Corps. He did his basic training at Camp LeJuene In North Carolina.
Bill's Marine Corp ID card
In March of 1945 he was in South Carolina and was sending post cards to his parents. In them he complains about having to write on the post card and asking them to send him his stationary. There is only a few post cards that are still around. He started writing letters and stopped writing on posts cards. When he returned from the service he convinced everyone that the letters should be burned. The following are those post cards.
March 11, 1945 post card to Bill's parents.
March 14, 1945 post card to Bill's parents.
March 16, 1945 post card to Bill's parents.
March 17, 1945 post card to Bill's parents.
He sent letters to his girlfriend, Jackie Phinney, and even proposed to her in a letter. When he got back home he convinced her of burning all of them.

He took leave in the last week of May 1945 to marry Jackie Phinney, daughter of Tige and Toots Phinney. He only had 15 days leave.
Bill Ribble and Jackie Phinney's marriage license.
They married on May 22, 1945. Wayne Roye and another classmate went with them to a town close to Graham. Although she had already taken all her exams, there was a couple more days until graduation. The dean of students Mrs. Howell, told her that she couldn't graduate if she got married. That is why they went to a nearby town. Before the ceremony, Mrs. Howell told the class that Jackie had an announcement to make. This took Jackie by surprise but she quickly told the class that she and Bill were getting married right after graduation and the entire class was invited. Once they sat down for the ceremony she whispered to the person on each side of her that they had already gotten married so. The class was small and it didn't take long for every one to know. They all kept the secret and speak of it at their reunions.

When his leave was over he reported to California. While he was there, Jackie road the train out there to join him. The Marines had told them that they would have no advanced notice when they shipped out or where they were going. Bill told Jackie that if he didn't come home at regular time, she would know that he had been shipped out. When that day came Jackie rode by home on the train and stayed with her parents until he was discharged.

On August 16, 1946, Bill was honorably discharged from the Marines. He was inducted in Dallas, Texas on February 28, 1945. They list him as being 70 1/2 inches. He must have grown while he was in the service because in his 20s he was over 6 ft tall. They described him as having a ruddy complexion. He had a very light complexion, but from the time he was a kid he worked outdoors on the ranch and farm. Plus he played a lot of football outdoors, the sun had probably caused his face to be ruddy. He was a barber and a guard. He shipped out to the Pacific area on September 16, 1945.

Lunch is pot luck and there is a short church under the tabernacle. On Sunday, June 6, 1948, there were 5 generations of male Ribble in attendance. They sat on a bench in front of the rock wall of the tabernacle at Gooseneck to have their photograph taken. Below is that picture.

A couple of months after Penny was born Bill decided to move the family to Blanchard, Oklahoma. His father, HL, had been a ranch foreman there for several years and needed help. They only lived there for around a year when the owner of the ranch sold it and the new owner did not need a foreman. Bill and Jackie and kids moved back to Graham.

Very often the Ribble family and Phinney families went on vacation together. This included Bill and Jackie Phinney Ribble, Jackie's brother, Glenn and his wife Margie Stone Phinney, their two daughters Karon and Vicki. Karon and her husband, Ronnie Harrell, had one daughter, Laura. Vicki and her husband, Chuck Mills, Sr and their son, Chuck Jr. Margie's mother, Ruby Wright Stone and occasionally Bill's mother, Jimmie Dillinder Ribble. Sometimes one or another of Bill and Jackie's kids joined them. It became a tradition that someone's vehicle break down on the trip, which always worked out fine because Bill and Glenn were excellent mechanics.
